Poker Betting Basics

The card game poker involves some betting. Although some beginning poker enthusiasts are very much oriented to the poker hands, they often get confused with the betting in poker. Here is a quick take on the betting in poker.

Beginning with poker lingo, bet means to place additional money into the pot. If you do not intend to place more money into the pot, you check. In poker, checking is similar to passing. If you sense you will not be winning or there is no chance of winning you may choose to fold; that is to discard your poker hand and lose interest in the present game. If you fold, the previous bets you placed into the pot will remain there.

If there is no bet to you, you may bet; that is to add money into the pot. Other poker player may either call the bet or fold. If you decide not to put more money into the pot, you may check. If no one places money into the pot, the poker game proceeds while the pot or the money to be won remains the same. If someone, other than you, decides to bet then your decisions will change in regards to the poker game.

If there is a bet to you, you may fold, call or raise. To fold in poker is to forfeit the game. You may be forced to fold the game if you sense there is no chance of your hand winning. On your turn you decide to fold, you do not anymore place money on the pot. If your hand has a considerable chance of making it big in the poker game, you may match the bet set by the other player and continue with the poker game. You may raise the minimum bet to pot and other poker players are to agree with your bet (stay with the amount you are saying) or raise the bet even further.

A cycle of betting (of calling and raising) continues until all the cards are dealt or all other players folded with only one player remains. When there are no more cards to deal and there still several players on the poker then a showdown happens. During the showdown in poker, the players expose their hands and the hand with the highest value wins the pot.

But not all money in the pot goes to the winner; the casino will rake its share of the pot before it is given to the winner.

The betting in poker is a cycle of calling, raising and folding. To call is to match the bet set forth by another poker player. If you plan to increase the base bet to place on the pot, you raise. If you decide to forfeit the game and let go of your cards, you fold.
